Moonspell – Memorial – Steamhammer/SPV

Furthering the descent from their metal roots, Moonspell has provided us with another 13 tracks of Portuguese power-goth. Combine this with classic metal guitar chords and some of the cleanest percussion work you’ve ever heard and you have the album "Memorial". Lyrics aside, the album seems to tell the tale of some epic battle long past. The song "Proliferation" shows one a new side of Moonspell with orchestral melodies and a heavy tympanic sound. Not too much female influence here, but they have it where it counts with the haunting melody "Luna". The album ends on a more unusual note with "Best Forgotten", a combination of weird synth sounds and whale song. If the album "Wolfheart" or "Darkness & Hope" is what you are looking for, then this album may not be for you.
